It is great to be the best at any one thing, as entrepreneurs we thrive to be experts in our industry and to become the go-to professionals for our clients. Many of us left our 9 to 5 jobs to have the freedom and flexibility that entrepreneurship offers. Week 3 of the 2023 NFL season is a great example of how exciting it can be to have the freedom to do what you do best.
This week we find that the Miami Dolphins will settle for nothing less than being excellent and setting standards. The 70-20 win against the Denver Broncos started with Tereek Hill scoring the first touchdown, but it didn’t stop there. De’Von Achane became the AFC Player of the Week with his stellar performance.
Achane, who was the 84th overall pick during the 3rd round of the 2023 NFL draft has shattered and tied multiple records. In Dolphin history, Achane is the first rookie since 2012 and the first running back since 2016 to earn an AFC Player of the Week Award. He became the first rookie, since the AFL and NFL merged in 1970, to score the most yards within his first or second career game. He is the first Dolphin to have 203 rushing yards in a single game.
Within his first two NFL games, Achane is earning his spot and is living proof that when you are given the right environment to flourish there is no stopping you. De’Von Achane and Raheem Mostert both received four touchdowns. The last pair of running backs to score four touchdowns in a single game were Priest Holmes and Derrick Blaylack of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2004. Speaking of the Chiefs, Andy Reid became the first NFL head coach on record to win 100 games for two teams (Chiefs 100-45 and Eagles 140-102-1) https://www.nfl.com/news/chiefs-andy-reid-becomes-first-head-coach-with-100-wins-for-two-teams .
Miami’s 70-20 win over the Bronco’s is the highest scoring game since 1966, when the Washington Redskins beat the New York Giants 72-41. With the help of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who completed all 16 passes that lead to 206 yards, two touchdowns, and had no interceptions in the first half, the Dolphins were able to gain a 35-13 lead. Running 726 yards and 350 rushing yards, the Dolphins become the second team to run so many yards in a single game. By the end of the game the Dolphins came close to the 1951 Rams record of 735 yards, but Mike McDaniel…
CNN Sports reported Head Coach Mike McDaniel explanation to why the Dolphins chose to take a knee instead of smashing the records for total yards. “It felt like chasing points, chasing a record, that’s not what we came here to do. That doesn’t have a bearing on the overall season outcome,” Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said. “Ten times out of 10 you concede and kneel down in those situations. Because there was an attainable record, that was cool, but the message I thought it would send wasn’t in line with how I view things” https://www.cnn.com/2023/09/24/sport/nfl-dolphins-70-points-spt-intl/index.html. McDaniel’s example shows us what integrity, honor, and compassion looks like and how to put it into practice.
