Are you feeling overwhelmed about starting your own business? Do you think you will be perceived as a fraud? If so, you may be suffering from imposter syndrome. This is when you are overcome by self-doubt and fear.
Don’t worry, many people go through this in the beginning. The thing about doubt and fear is that it is the perception of yourself and your abilities. Changing your mindset will likely change the outcome. Here are a few scenarios where imposter syndrome could exist.
Scenario One: Turning Over a New Leaf
Your life has not turned out the way you dreamed that it would, and you may be struggling with the idea of being worthy of a new start. You may think:
Am I deserving of this new start?
Will people judge me according to my past?
The answer to both questions is YES! People will judge you; they will judge you if you succeed or learn, but you also must give yourself some grace and lean on your gifts and talents. Everyone deserves a second chance to make their life better; that includes you.
Scenario Two: Leaving Stability
Your whole career you have worked with established companies. You finally reached the point where you are not living, paycheck to paycheck and may even have a little saving set aside. How could you possibly leave your day job to start your own business? Sure, you have always wanted to start your own business and make your own rules, but you start questioning:
Am I able to successfully run a business?
Will people pay for my product or service?
Again, the answer is YES! In addition to having years of experience or perfecting your talents in your spare time, you have watched people both successfully and unsuccessfully operate businesses. Know that you are not an imposter, you are a professional. Now is the time to start your business. Don’t let fear stop you.
Scenario Three: Been There and Done That!
You opened a business in the past and you felt encouraged, supported, perhaps even validated as everyone cheered you on. Over time for one reason or another, the business failed. Now you are embarrassed, ashamed, and don’t know if you have it in you to try again.
You have convinced yourself that people will not support or promote a new venture. You may start to ask yourself am I cut out to be a business owner or should I go back to working for someone else. Well, let me ask you, did you give it your all? Did you learn anything from your experience? What will you do differently this time around?
Equipped with these answers, it is likely that you know that you should start again. Move pass the fear, doubt, and shame. It is time to start anew.
