Recently, on a beautiful fall-like day, I decided to sit outside and watch the planes go by. I wondered where they were going, were the passengers excited, content, or terrified? Regardless, they would reach their destination. Similarly, our journey as entrepreneurs can be filled with emotions.
Sometimes our journey can feel like to the Denver Broncos in the beginning of the 2023 NFL season, failure, after failure, after devastating failure, you start to wonder if you will ever win. Perhaps you have some wins, but you start to second guess yourself and like the Pittsburgh Steelers no matter how hard you try you just can’t get it right. It is even possible; at times we can be thriving like the Philadelphia Eagles and circumstances will alter our path. Let’s face it, we all have areas in our business that we could improve upon, but we must be flexible to change.
Over the years, I have watched how American football has evolved into a weekly family event. The sport has created generations of fans. To continue the creation of long-term customers, the NFL used pull marketing to reach the newest generation of fans, by airing the first international game of the 2023 NFL season on Disney+. Disney+ provided viewers with a “fully animated alternate broadcast” with an historic backdrop, Toy Story (Pixar, X, Sept.11, 2023, 6:49pm).
Disney+ acquired Pixar in 2006; Toy Story was the first full-length computer-animated movie debuting in 1995. In 2018, Disney+ also acquired ESPN. This was a brilliant business move by Disney+ because it creates continual revenue. Understanding your business’ financial history and current standing is a key element for any business decision, especially in mergers and acquisitions. I find mergers and acquisitions to be fascinating; and would one day love to purchase existing businesses. Although my journey will be new, I plan to get noticed like Puka Nacua.
In the 5th round of the 2023 NFL draft, the Los Angeles Rams chose Nacua as the 177th draft pick. Nacua scored his first touchdown in the week 4 games against the Indianapolis Colts. It was also the play that would win the game. The way that his teammates gathered around and celebrated him right there on the field was inspirational.
Can you only image what it would be like to keep working towards a goal and when you finally reach it, you are celebrated by many? Envisioning this moment is exciting and motivating! Nacua, who has only played in two professional football games, became the first rookie to have over 10 catches in back-to-back games and to have over 100 receiving yards in each game.
No matter if you are setting new records like Nacua or facing adversities like the Eagles, you will succeed. The field you play on is irrelevant, what matters is that you don’t give up. Even if you are full of emotions, continue to move towards your dreams, learn from your mistakes and try to make the right moves, you will reach your destination.
